It’s not too late to get 2018 off to a good start. Five simple changes you can make to your daily lifestyle, to be your fittest and healthiest self this New Year.

Does this thought have you all fired up every January 1st? Armed with your list of resolutions, how often do these remain in your daily routine by December 31st? 2018 is well under way. Have you kept your resolutions so far? If not, you need to ask yourself why these are not sustainable in your daily lifestyle. It’s not too late. Start your year off on the right foot using these five simple yet highly effective tweaks to your daily routine.

The key to making sustainable changes to your life is by starting small, and being consistent. It is said that it takes 28 days to develop a new habit. Why not take each month at a time? Add in a few new changes each month and complete them consistently for the whole month, then keep building on this.

Here are five small changes you can add this month to give yourself the best start to your year.

EAT YOUR GREENS. Start to make it a priority to eat vegetables every day. Like taking a daily multivitamin, eating a wide variety of vegetables has countless nutritional benefits. The key is to use them as a base for your meals, instead of just an accompaniment. If you would usually have meat as the basis of a meal, instead make a colourful stir fry or salad, and add meat in as a topping. Green smoothies and vegetable soups are also a good way to sneak a load of veggies into your diet. Start by challenging yourself to add spinach and kale into one meal every day, and then keep going!

GET YOUR BLOOD PUMPING. Doing just 30 minutes of exercise, any exercise, each day has such an impact on all areas of your life. Whether it’s a walk on your lunch break, a swim on an evening or a run to begin your day; daily exercise is important for your mind and body. It has the power to eliminate toxins, reduce stress, reduce excess body fat and can also be really fun. It could be as easy as buying a yoga mat and some weights, and following a YouTube video from the comfort of your own home each day. Did you know weight training keeps you burning calories for hours after you’ve finished your exercise?

REHYDRATE. Rehydrate your body to flush out toxins and support vital bodily functions, as well as promoting clearer skin, weight loss and maintaining energy levels. Water is essential for a healthy body and mind. Try adding cucumber slices, mint, lemon or ginger to your water to spice it up, or opt for herbal teas if you prefer warm drinks. After drinking herbal tea or flavoured water consistently for one month, you will not be able to live without it.

GET TECH SAVVY. Use technology to improve your health and fitness. Apps like Cronometer allow you to record everything you eat in a day, and then highlight anything important you’re lacking in your diet through an easy-to-read nutrient breakdown. Workout apps can teach you how to exercise with simple tutorials, and track your physical activity, providing the motivation and knowledge you need to help you achieve your fitness goals. Apps and Social Media can connect you to others on a similar journey, for support and inspiration.

REINVENT YOUR SNACKS. Everyone likes to snack. And you can still do this and maintain a healthy diet. All you need to do is find healthier (but still tasty) alternatives and have these by your side for when the cravings hit. Maintaining a healthy diet is usually a more effective method for reaching your natural body weight than exercising alone (however a combination of both is the goal!). Try hummus and toasted pitta bread, fully loaded guacamole and crackers or sweet treats like grapes, dates or apple pieces dipped in peanut butter.

 

 

Keep on making small changes like this, and you’ll have changed your big picture by the close of 2018.
