About the Shop

Charles Clinkard came to Leeds in 1974. Said to be haunted by a ghost called Veronica, the store stands out from other shoe shops in the area due to its winning blend of great choice, quality product, expert fitting knowledge and a keen focus on excellent customer service. Situated on Land’s Lane, the store is close to Briggate, the main pedestrianised high street in the city, overflowing with well-known retail giants.

The store, whose current footwear adorned shelves were once stacked with televisions, is home to many loyal customers. Standing out for manager Mark, one customer named Chris interestingly ran the first ever Leeds 10k Jane Tomlinson ‘Run for All’ event. Jane was Mark, the manager’s sister!

Easily accessible due to the shop’s proximity to the city’s central railway and bus stations, both ten minutes on foot from the store; the best place to park if travelling via car is the NCP Car Park for the Core Shopping Centre, which is accessed via Albion Street not far from the store.

About the Area

A major mill city during the Industrial Revolution, Leeds in West Yorkshire is full of historic architecture, most prominent the awe-inspiring Victorian and Edwardian shopping Arcades, still functioning parts of the city’s unique make-up. Beneath Queen’s Arcade’s magnificent glass roof, conveniently one minute from the Charles Clinkard store, the local deli Olive and Rye café is found. After a successful shopping trip, treat yourself to one of their amazing hot breakfasts, brunches or a cup of coffee, or sample something from their extensive meat and cheese counter. Leed’s Grand Theatre, the City Varieties Music Hall and the Victoria Quarter, an exclusive shopping destination housed within perhaps the most elaborate of the arcades, are all within walking distance, for shoppers wanting to maximise their visit to the city.

About the Manager
Starting his career in the world of shoe retail in 1981, as a teenage Saturday boy for the major footwear retailer Freeman Hardy & Willis, Mark, the Leeds store manager recalls his first memory of Charles Clinkard when his friend bought a pair of leather brogues from the company, and he was very jealous because he couldn’t afford a pair himself!
When he was made redundant from the British Shoe Corporation in 1998, Mark luckily landed his first job at Charles Clinkard, as manager of the York branch. Now 20 years on, he now heads up the wonderful Leeds store team, enjoying the constant challenges and changing factors consistently making each day unique. He rates the best part of his job working for a family-owned business, a place he feels his opinion is truly valued.
Now a shoe connoisseur, Mark highly recommends the Gabor boot and shoe collection due to their designs and high levels of comfort. His favourite pair of shoes ever owned were some Rockport boots which he says were indestructible! Upon winning the lottery, he will treat himself to a bespoke pair of premium Barker shoes. Born in Wakefield, Mark has also lived in South Australia between 1974 and 1977, and driving his classic Mini and taking Suzie his Cairn terrier for walks keeps him busy when away from the shop.
