Customer Reviews:

A big thanks to all the staff at Eldon Square, Newcastle. Recently went to purchase our girls school shoes, didn’t book an appointment, but didn’t have to wait long to be seen. The different seating areas are a brilliant idea and made us feel safe. Also saw each area was wiped down after each family had left. Thanks for the efficient service.

Shopped at Eldon Square Newcastle upon Tyne branch. I was assisted by Laura Rice I am a disabled lady of 84 years of age. The selection of boots was unbelievable and the assistance from Laura was the same. Thank you Charles Clinkard keep up the good work.

About the Shop

Prominent in the buzzing city set on the northern bank of the River Tyne, the Charles Clinkard store in Newcastle boasts outstanding customer service, an extensive product range, high levels of fitting, footwear expertise and a genuine family feel. Outstandingly, the store has five floors and payroll number one still works there! It has resided in the Intu Eldon Square Shopping Centre since 1977, offering customers a wide selection of men’s, women’s, girl’s and boy’s footwear and accessories, as well as expert shoe fitting for the whole family.

Conveniently, Eldon Square has a multi storey carpark on Percy Street. You do have to pay to park here, however you can park for free after 5pm Monday to Saturday. The shopping centre comes equipped with both its own train and bus station, and there is even a well-connected Metro network within the city- Monument or Haymarket being the closest stops to the store. Always full of great characters, the store has a loyal army of customers who are more like friends to the staff. James, the store’s manager particularly looks forward to seeing a guide dog-training couple who regularly visit the store, always bringing in the most gorgeous Labradors!

About the Area

A city famous for its architecture, notably the Tyne and Millennium bridges, Newcastle is also famous for its nightlife. Home to the first Greggs bakery (Gosforth in 1951), the city also gave birth to Lucozade, when the W. Owen & Son’s pharmacist devised it in 1927. Interestingly, the Geordie music producer and former ‘The Animals’ bassist Chas Chandler brought Jimi Hendrix back to the city from New York where he discovered him, leading to many sightings of the musician busking in the streets of Newcastle in the 60’s.

Sit with a coffee and watch the world go by at Fenwick Department Store (the family run department store chain founded in the city), just one of the numerous lovely cafes around Old Eldon Square. Maximise your visit with a trip to the Hancock Museum, which has some amazing events and fascinating displays of natural history all year round, or the Theatre Royal which hosts residence to an unbelievable number of big names (Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan to name just two!).

The city hosts the largest half marathon in the world, the Great North Run if you are looking to get involved in something spectacular during your visit. Alternatively, sample a slice of the area’s history with a stop off at the best preserved example of a Roman frontier, Hadrian’s Wall, just a one hour drive from the store, or Beamish, the open air museum showcasing historic everyday life in North East England only 30 minutes by car from the city centre. A must-visit is the castle the city is named after!

About the Manager

A typical day at the store sees James arriving at 8am to get started on the daily paperwork; he debriefs with the management team re the previous day and plans for the day ahead. At 8.50 his store does a staff briefing to update the team on trade, new lines, promotions, famous events on that day in history and a quick quiz to get their brains engaged and have a bit of fun. Then onto the shop floor for the doors opening!James started as a trainee manager in 1994 at that very store, under the guidance of Charles Clinkard legend Mr Farrar who worked for the business for 40 years! In 1996 he was promoted to store manager at the Northallerton store, where he remained for two years until a new branch was opened within Manchester’s Trafford Centre. After a couple of years building a presence for the new store, James was offered the opportunity to move again, this time to a big new store opening in Milton Keynes. After 15 years establishing a very successful store and life in Milton Keynes he finally returned home to where it all started, to take over the fantastic Newcastle branch, making it 23 years with the business!

His earliest memory of Charles Clinkard was going to get new school shoes with his Mum (she would bribe him to be good with the promise of a new Star Wars figurine from Fenwick’s). James really values others- his team, colleagues across the company and the array of people he gets through his doors! When asked what motivates him to succeed at work, he replied that it was the responsibility ‘for ensuring the success of the branch and job security of those who work for’ him. He added ‘I'm very proud to have helped guide the careers of a number of our current store managers’.

A lover of Sci-Fi and live music, James counts himself lucky to have seen some of the greatest artists and bands in the world play their music live (including Prince twice!). Outside of work, he loves music, movies, socialising (in moderation!), football (watching and just about playing), and walking his ‘beautiful, crazy’ dog along the North East coastline.

Moving onto the product he knows best- shoes, he considers Rieker to be as fun and colourful as ever at the moment; his customers are loving them too. His favourite shoes ever bought were a pair of cool, retro Adidas SL72 in blue and white, sometimes known as the Starsky trainer (Starsky and Hutch). Upon winning the lottery however, he would be wearing flip flops… as he’d most certainly be on his way to a tropical paradise!
