Customer Reviews:
I don’t buy new shoes frequently so asked for advice from friends. I decided to look at Loakes Hoskins boots and so visited Charles Clinkard in York. I was helped by Ginny who was very knowledgeable and put me at ease straight away. I came back to the store a few hours later after shopping around and Ginny remembered me, my size and other aspects of our earlier conversation which made me feel quite special. She was great throughout the experience and even though for me this was a major and rare purchase I am now already planning a return visit and purchase. Thank you, Ginny.
Excellent service from Ginny in your York store when I was choosing some Caprice Trainers. The only shop where the shoes were actually fitted and helpful comments made. I will certainly return!
Interestingly, the York store stands on an old Viking settlement which is now a tourist attraction (the Yorvik centre). It was unearthed when the Coppergate Shopping Centre was built here in the late 70s, yielding over 40,000 Viking artefacts including the famous ‘York Helmet’ - the best preserved piece of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship ever to have been discovered! With a prime focus on top quality customer service, the independent store which opened its doors in 1989 stocks brands that larger multiples might not, winning a great number of loyal customers within the local area. Formerly a bookstore, the store managed by Ginny delivers an extensive range of shoes and accessories for both men and women.
As you drive into York, you can leave the stress behind and take one of the very regular Park and Ride buses into the city. Alternatively, the Coppergate Shopping Centre where the store stands is linked to Piccadilly multi storey car park, which can be accessed via York’s inner ring road. The store is also 10 minutes on foot from the city’s Railway Station.
In the heart of the historic walled city of York, by the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss, stands our Charles Clinkard store. With town walls perhaps the longest and best preserved in England, the city is also known for being the most haunted in Europe as well as having a rich past in chocolate making; both Nestle and Terry’s Chocolate grew up here.
Certainly the unmissable is the York Minster, a large gothic cathedral which dominates the city, as well as The Shambles, believed to be the oldest shopping street in Europe (even getting a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086!). The largest food and drink festival in Great Britain is held here every September, also a chocolate festival at the end of March and a taster festival in June. The Yorvic Centre is a must-visit too; the place to go to discover what Viking life was really like, conveniently standing opposite the store.
The best place for tea and cake after your successful shopping trip to Charles Clinkard is Yorkshire’s famous Betty’s tearooms, just round the corner. They do an unrivalled traditional Yorkshire cream tea.
Ginny starts her day at 8.15am where she will write a task list, check emails and make sure the windows are looking commercial and tidy. The rest of her day centres around selling on the shop floor, supporting customers and staff with anything they need. Some days involve deliveries and therefore store merchandising, and some include staff training. Now a member of the society of shoe fitters MSSF, Ginny is motivated by achieving her store’s budget, looking after customers and making them happy. She puts high importance on making sure her team enjoy their day at work while being successful.
Her earliest memory of the company was in 1999, going to the Charles Clinkard head office for her interview where she met Charles for the first time. She was extremely nervous but he made her feel comfortable. Following two successful interviews, she has now been at Charles Clinkard for over 20 years. Quickly establishing herself as a capable manager, Ginny was nominated as ‘Best Manager’ in the 2011 Drapers Footwear Awards. She has also taken on the role of training and development manager since, in addition to managing the York store.
In her free time, Ginny loves to spend her days outdoors. Whether that's road biking in the summer, walks with her cocker spaniel Harley or enjoying the sun on her holidays!
