There are people who will wear something – anything – so long as it is fashionable, and there are those who won’t. We are in the latter category.
Don’t get us wrong, we do fashion. We adore all manner of pretty, witty, chic and sleek things, things with timeless elegance and beauty. Trends that we won’t tire of.
And sometimes, just occasionally, we get the feeling that fashion is working with us, not against us. Frankly, it’s about time; there’s been a whole lot of trends from the inconvenient (crop tops) to the mind-blowing bad (harem pants and scrunchies) that just don’t work for the everyday person.
So it’s a bit of a relief that this season, heels are getting lower and sturdier. No more tricksy high-heeled stilettos requiring expertly applied blister plasters (if you’re lucky) and submitting to the indignity of being carried from place to place like a weary toddler (if you’re not). No more teetering, no more tottering, no more ‘bambi-on-ice’; this season, it’s all about the winter wedge.
Keeping the oomph but with the added luxury of comfort, this season’s wedge has a low ladylike heel and a forties feel; dare to wear legs bare.
Leading our cast of wondrous wedges is the Josef Seibel Briana ankle boots, a feisty fusion of AW13’s hottest trends; crocodile print, patent leather and wedge heels, all in an eminently wearable package. The heels extend to a modest 3.5cm, ankle length uppers to lock in the comfort factor and easy fastening with laces … could this be the ideal weekend getaway shoe?
Following on its (wedge) heels, is the Hispanitas Versalles. Unbearably dainty and irresistibly charming, we’re mesmerised by its cute bow, stud detailing and that incredibly comfortable elastic top line. Tuck a blouse into some tailored trousers and team them with the Versalles for shopping trips that will make you the envy of fellow shoppers.
And finally an office favourite. Exuding qualities not dissimilar to a style conscious panther is the Gabor Impact. Sleek, sumptuous and understated, it has a more than manageable 4cm heel, shrouded in black suede and finished with a delicate buckle.
