What to Wear this Winter: Fill Your Boots

The winter season is fast approaching, and you can only think about one thing:

What your ankles should look like for the occasion.

Fear not; we are here to help you handle this supremely pressing issue. Yes, the skies may still be teasing us with glimpses of pastel blue between the clouds, and you may still be finding grains of sand between your toes and wondering why iced tea never tastes quite as good from your fridge as it did in that cute European cafe, but there’s no getting away from the fact that it really is too cold to work a bare leg now, even with socks.

But before you resign to the footwear equivalent of a thick, fleecy onesie (I probably shouldn’t wear them out of the house, but they’re so comfortable I don’t give a damn what the neighbours think) there is still some time to work something a little more fashionable whilst keeping your toes warm.

Here’s our guide to the autumn boot, and how to find your perfect pair.

The Ankle Boot

Only those with the longest of limbs should attempt the current trend for ankle boots worn with opaque tights; they can seem to cut the leg off at the most unflattering point. That’s not to say avoid it altogether; a low-cut ankle boot that dips toward the foot lengthens the leg , providing a much more flattering alternative.

Equestrian

It’s not just the glossy posse who will gravitate toward a knee-high riding boot this season. In fact, most women will be sporting this style; semi-sensible, leather or suede, tan or black, zip fastening.  From graduate to school-run mum, the equestrian boot is corsetry for calves: vaguely glamorous yet somewhat practical; stylish yet wet-weather appropriate. Inadvertently fashionable. It’s love.

The Biker Boot

Partly attributed to the strong grunge trend thrown up by the catwalks, the biker boot is the style of the season. We have road tested a few pairs, and all we can conclude is that a solid leather pair of biker boots are like a good wine – only growing better with age. Daily wear and tear just adds an aged, vintage feel.  If you’re always on the go, opt for a flat pair – they’re just as chic. If you’re a heel devotee, the chunkier block that this style tends to rock will give you that little bit more confidence.

Fur

If you are an UGG woman to the core, and suedette foot snuggles are the only way your feet will carry you out of the house as the temperature falls, we’re actually OK with that. But that’s only because this year’s styles incorporate some of the hottest trends, such as the studs and buckles of aforementioned biker.

However, if we can tempt you to consider something that will keep your feet just as, if not more, cosy and warm then we would like to introduce you to fur. Faux fur is no faux par this season. Full-on fashionistas will be working something fuzzy — the edict came straight from Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel.

Oh, go on then… here’s an UGG.
