Haunting Halloween Biscuits

In a chilling 4 days, Halloween will be upon us.

Which means you’ve got precious little time – four days, to be precise – to figure out your costume, which of course has to be hilarious yet sexy, quirky yet on-trend and totally unique. Oh, and scary enough to cause innocent strangers to scatter like spooked pigeons.

You also had better get on with carving a pumpkin (this year it’s going to look awesome, and you’re making the most delicious soup with the innards); plan a party (where else are you going to wear that costume?) and decorate the house to scare off all those annoying trick-or-treaters infernally rapping at the door.

Oh, that’s not the point of decorating the house? Right, let’s have a rethink. You haven’t decided on your costume yet anyway.

One thing you can do to really get in the wicked mood for All Hallows Eve is make these spooky Halloween biscuits! Not only are they simple, fun and delicious, but they’re great to hand out to trick-or-treaters – that’s if you don’t sink your fangs in them first!

Halloween Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients

– 300g plain flour

– 250g butter, softened

– 140g caster sugar

– 1 egg yolk

– 2 tsp vanilla extract

How to make

1) Mix the softened butter and  caster sugar in a large bowl.

2) Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract, beating to combine.

3) Sift in the flour and mix – time to get your hands dirty!

4) Roll the dough out on a lightly floured work surface to a thickness of about 1 cm.

5) Get creative! You can use cookie cutters, or draw a design on greaseproof paper to cut around with a sharp knife – or you go wing it (we did)!

6) Line a baking tray with grease proof paper and pop them in the over for 8-10 mins at 190C/Gas 5.

7) Set aside to harden, then allow your biscuits to cool on a wire rack.

8) Decorate with icing!

We made our icing with icing sugar and food colouring, but you can get colours in ready-to-pipe tubes too. Try adding metallic dragées, jelly sweets, jam or any other sweet treats to create different effects. Don’t worry if they don’t come out immaculately on your first attempt (ours certainly didn’t) but you can just scoff those ones to hide the evidence! Most importantly, be creative and have fun!

In the infamous words of every Blue Peter presenter, “here’s some we made earlier”:
