Every so often, the fashion pendulum swings in favour of comfort.
And this week fashion followers everywhere are keeping their feet firmly on the ground in a pair of flats.
Yes, the celebratory champagne-popping looks of the festive season’s revels are bowing out of the limelight, and our feet are rejoicing. That’s not to say you can’t get glammed up; it’s just that those adorable flat shoe options are no longer going to be tucked away in your bag until the end of the evening when you’re about to face the trek home, hailing a taxi with heels in hand. It’s time to break out the flats for the entire evening, so you look and feel at ease. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Flat Shoe Types
There are 3 main categories of flat shoes. The loafer, brogue and the ballet pump.
Loafers
Ladies’ loafers have taken note of last year’s slipper trend, becoming lower cut and less clumpy than the classic design. The loafer is ideal for that early transition into spring, offering a little more coverage than the ballet pump yet allowing feet to keep cool.
Ballet Pumps
The ballet pump is the ideal summer shoe, as being closed-toe, they’re a godsend if your feet haven’t yet embarked on their spring/summer pedicure programme. (Now’s the time ladies – start pumicing!) A ballet pump that has too flat a sole offers very little in the way of support, so opt for something a little thicker or with a low heel to avoid foot pain and even damage if you’re wearing them for long periods. Gabor shoes are designed to be more pliable underfoot, with soft cushioning to help keep feet comfortable.
Brogues

The fashionable full stop beneath the ankle, brogues can add edge to even the most girlish of outfits, or add a masculine tint to a tea dress. Keep them light in for spring – in colour and robustness – and your worries about erring on the side that’s tad butch will dissipate.
Whatever your preference, be sure to make the most of the flat shoe trend and enjoy a victory for both comfort and style. Let us know what’s going to be on your feet this season in the comments!
